Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks from today’s top designers

Welcome all! Hello to old friends (or should I say, “long time” friends, we’re not at all old, are we?) and howdy hi to the newcomers who have found your way here from Quiltmaker’s blog hop.
Seems like about a hundred years ago (it was really just last spring), I was invited to submit a block for Quiltmaker’s special issue. All they needed was a little 12 inch (finished size) block. What an honor!
So, before they could change their minds, quick like a bunny, I zipped up this darling little block, using one of my most favorite flowers, the tulip. I seem to be into ribbony things these days, too, so I tied them up with a bow.
To create the block, I used techniques from the new book (More! Hand Applique by Machine), including bobbin work to make the fun little curlie cues on the tulips, and used the new Wash Away Applique Sheets instead of freezer paper.
Now the magazine is appearing on the newsstands and my sweet little block is on the cover! How cool is that? It’s right above the “O” in Blocks.
There are lots of nifty blocks in this issue, from all styles of quilting. They’ve even included simply sashed layouts for bed sized quilts, and the yardages needed to complete them. There are also design suggestions for quilting the blocks.
I thought it would be fun to turn my little sweetie into a wall hanging. I’ve just repeated the design from the magazine two more times, but swapped out longer tails for the border bows. Simple half-square triangles make the narrow borders interesting.
I’ve created a little pattern for it. Remember, you’ll need the magazine for the basic applique shapes, they aren’t included in this pattern.
All this week Quiltmaker is hosting a blog hop featuring the designers in the magazine. Click on the button, right, to see who else is blogging. While you’re there, register to win my original block, and the other 99 blocks too.
Before you go popping off to hop blogs, I have three copies of the magazine to give away. Just leave a comment, tell me how much you love applique! You know you do! I’ll draw the names on Thursday.

I just love applique, I’ve watched your quilts for 3 years before attempting the 2009 Now and Forever Quilt. I can’t wait to finish it. I think before Christmas because I’m almost there. I can’t wait to applique something else now, so I’ve also got 4 of your books.
Thanks for all the time you spend teaching us how to do things easily.

My first guild class was in applique–that was in the mid ’80’s.
November 9th, 2009 at 7:48 pm
I want to try your method of applique. Ive printed out the BOM and am waiting for the book to read more about it. I’d like to win a copy of the magazine too. Here’s hoping I win!
November 9th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
Hi Beth and congrats on your inclusion in this magazine. I am still working on my love of applique, but it is growing thanks to taking your class earlier this year! I did finish my class project!
November 9th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
Beth, you asked that we tell you how much we love applique. I love looking at your beautiful applique but I don’t do applique. Your block is absolutely gorgeous!
November 9th, 2009 at 10:37 pm
What an adorable little block, Beth! I have to say that I’ve tried to love hand appliqué and — so far — failed miserably. *But* I do like machine appliqué and am planning to get your second book (I already have the first one) very soon.
November 10th, 2009 at 12:14 am
I love your sweet little block and using Wash Away Applique sheets intrigues me. This looks like something I would enjoy trying.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:53 am
Tulips are my favorite, too! I love appliqué because it makes almost anything possible. I love your block design and the little quilt you designed for it is lovely.
What a fun giveaway; I’d love to win one of the magazines and make your little quilt for a tulip-loving friend . . . maybe in time for Christmas.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:37 am
Your applique flowers are fab!
November 10th, 2009 at 3:00 am
Beth, I can’t say that I love applique since I’ve never tried it. How about I’d love to TRY applique as a 2010 resolution? Kathie L.
November 10th, 2009 at 3:09 am
I really really do love applique and I think your block is so sweet. I look forward to getting hold of the 100 Blocks. Thanks Judi H

November 10th, 2009 at 5:50 am
I love the look of your block, I haven’t done a lot of appliqué but would love to make your block, I might just have to give it a go. I would be something to sit at night and do
November 10th, 2009 at 6:26 am
I absolutely love applique!! Your technique has made me a changed woman! LOL I will be teaching your methods, using your books, at my LQS in Wyandotte (MI). Can’t wait for the new book to come out.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
November 10th, 2009 at 6:50 am
Beth–I love YOUR method of applique! Every quilt I make now has at least a little bit applique–even if it’s just on the label.
November 10th, 2009 at 7:23 am
OK, I admit I love applique’, especially looking at it. I think I have every one of your BOMs and have made several. I have been a fan for years.

I love your technique! It makes applique so much more fun. You are a wonderful teacher (Alaskan cruise a couple of years ago!) and are so generous sharing your patterns and creativity with all of us! Keep up the good work.
November 10th, 2009 at 8:07 am
Such a sweet block. I use to avoid applique till I found the freezer paper method. Thanks for teaching it, now I don’t avoid it anymore.

I have loved applique since a young age. And I love your tulip block!
November 10th, 2009 at 8:13 am
I love applique - have only done a couple of projects, but have taken lectures in and classes to find a suitable way to do it for me. Thank you for the lovely tulip block.
November 10th, 2009 at 8:29 am
I struggle with applique, but love the results.
Have seen many beautiful quilts made from your patterns.

Applique is absolutely one of my favorite quilting methods. I really enjoy hand applique (needle turn).
November 10th, 2009 at 8:59 am
I love love applique - my last 2 quilts had lots of applique and your block is beautiful.
November 10th, 2009 at 9:01 am
Great applique block as usual.
November 10th, 2009 at 9:01 am
I have always loved the look of applique. I aquired the courage to try it after I found you and your site. I bet I watched your little video ten times before I actually did it. And your book has helped a lot as well. So…Thanks Beth.
November 10th, 2009 at 9:06 am
I DO love your block. I really like tulips. Congrats on making it to the cover!:) I have been here before and will be back. I enjoy reading what you write and looking at what you make!
November 10th, 2009 at 9:12 am
Beth - I have a thing for tulips and ribbons as well! I wish I could tie a bow as well as you do with fabric. I am so hooked on applique now, that I’m not getting any of my piecing projects done. Thank you for all the great designs, we all so appreciate you!

What a beautiful quilt–I would love to try it…………
November 10th, 2009 at 9:21 am
Guess I won’t be eligible for any drawings. I absolutely HATE applique!!!! I would rather eat gravel with gravy! Perhaps if I had learned”Hand Applique by Machine” to begin with instead of trying to learn needle turn applique I would be okay, I am trying to bring myself to slowly overcome this hatred. Please hurry with your second book on machine applique. That may completely change my life.
November 10th, 2009 at 9:31 am
I love that you created a pattern to go with your block! I can’t wait to pick up a copy of the magazine!
November 10th, 2009 at 9:34 am
I love applique. It’s so beautiful. I love to do machine applique. But I also love hand work. Thanks for a chance to win this issue. Hugs Ariane
November 10th, 2009 at 9:58 am
I love applique, I usually do all mine by hand, but I do need to learn to use my machine more.
Debbie
November 10th, 2009 at 9:59 am
I love applique because I can take it with me to fill in all those hours of time spent waiting on kids at their activities.
November 10th, 2009 at 10:08 am
Applique is so pretty - and adds so much to a project. I need to become proficient at it! LOL!
November 10th, 2009 at 10:28 am
I love the block you made. I have a couple of different applique projects going right now. One will be a queen size quilt when i finish it next year.
November 10th, 2009 at 10:35 am
With winter arriving soon, what better way to ‘think Spring’ than with applique tulips. It’s a lovely block.
November 10th, 2009 at 10:39 am
How nice to see applique included in these 100 blocks; and you must be overjoyed to have yours’ on the cover! I am quite new at applique; but am hoping to do more of it as my confidence progresses.
November 10th, 2009 at 10:51 am
You were working on this in the midst of doing “Now & Forever”?!?! You are a quilt goddess!
Great block design. I have done a little applique and am hoping to try it with your technique (I first saw you way back when on Simply Quilts), the Now & Forever BOM and the wash away paper.
I like the bonus pattern for your block although rather than a wallhaging I see the center medallion of a round robin quilt developing……
November 10th, 2009 at 10:53 am
Oh how fun Beth! Applique is the best part of quilting as far as I’m concerned. My favorite technique is hand needleturn but time doesn’t always allow for that so I think I’ve tried every method out there now and I actually love them all!
November 10th, 2009 at 10:57 am
I am so addicted to applique’ that it is the only kind of quilts that I make. I love your block and hope there are lots more applique’ blocks in the magazine.
November 10th, 2009 at 11:04 am
I love your block! Applique by hand and machine are the only things I work on. Thanks for all you do!
November 10th, 2009 at 11:10 am
I always have enjoyed your blocks and have collected quite a few from your BOM’s…congrats on the cover girl!
November 10th, 2009 at 11:14 am
How exciting to be on the cover Beth! My passion is needleturn applique but am starting to do some machine applique. Will have to check out your new book.
November 10th, 2009 at 11:33 am
Beth, What a beautiful block you have designed. Thank you for the bonus pattern and the opportunity to win this issue. Take care and God bless, Cory
November 10th, 2009 at 11:47 am
I have appliqued on a few blocks, and enjoy the serenity of hand-work of any kind!
Blessings,
KT
November 10th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
i like to applique, but i’m not very good at it - this is a lovely block!
November 10th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
I’ve loved applique since I saw your thing on Kaye Wood’s site. After ordering your book and a BOM I have just become even more in love with applique.
That block is absolutley gorgeous! So pretty and whimsy, it’d make a perfect pillow too.
November 10th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Beth, you were my first applique teacher. I giggled and struggled while learning on a cruise to Alaska. Over the years I have experimented with many different ways to applique, but you started this whole journey for me. Many mahalos. =!=
November 10th, 2009 at 12:57 pm

November 10th, 2009 at 1:47 pm

November 10th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
I have just learned to love applique. My first quilt was a double irish chain with a 4 leaf clover in the alternate block. I hated applique for a long time. I have since tried other ways to applique and finally love it. Thanks for the chance.
November 10th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
I just love your designs and will be buying some of your books with my Christmas money, but I’d love the have the magazine now…to tide me over!
November 10th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
Your block is lovely. Thanks for the tip about the wash away applique.
November 10th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
I love the giveaways.Thanks you
November 10th, 2009 at 4:40 pm
Making that 12″ block into a small wallhanging is just a great idea. As we are looking at winter, here in Michigan, it helps to know that spring will be coming.
November 10th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
I love to applique, mostly by hand at this point, but I’m eagerly waiting for your new book to come out so I can try to perfect my machine work.
November 10th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
I love applique and I love your applique. I’ve saved most of your BOMs.
November 10th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Applique…a struggle. I need a tried and true way that works for me. I can do smaller projects and not feel overwhelmed.
November 10th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
I love tulips, too! I have several designs already, but I think yours is the sweetest. Gotta get the pattern!
November 10th, 2009 at 5:56 pm
Oh, I’ve been eyeing that magazine! Would love to win. And want to get better at machine applique! Thanx.
November 10th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Your block is sweet, and the tulip is one of my favorite flowers, too. I think I like my applique better by machine than hand.
November 10th, 2009 at 6:16 pm
I am new to applique and am trying all the different ways to do it. I love the idea of making the shapes and all the ways you can stitch and carry on with it. Your block is fabulous, I love tulips and I am presently making new curtains in the tulip theme and have decopauged textured tulips all around my Scrap Bin (formerly a large metal tub) in different mediums (ribbon, tissue paper, etc.) I clicked to see the pattern price, and woo hoo, it was free. Thank you for taking the time to do that. I look forward to piecing it and continuing to follow your blog.
November 10th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
I love applique, it stimulatest the mind!
November 10th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
Applique is my very favorite. I love the way it all comes together to
give a good picture of what I am trying to portray. And I find it very
relaxing to do this kind of hand work.
November 10th, 2009 at 7:08 pm
I love applique, but I am still learning….. doesn’t always come out the way I planned….
Congrats on getting in the magazine, and thanks for the give away!
Sheila
November 10th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
I LOVE your block! And I just love machine applique too. I’d love a chance to win the magazine.
November 10th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
Your method for applique is the only one that didn’t make me hate it.
Thanks.
November 10th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
When it comes to quilting, applique is my first love - especially needleturn because it is so portable. Having purchased your book, “Hand Appliique by Machine”, I am now going to try that method. Our quilt group is doing a thirties-type child’s quilt and if I want to get it done on time, I’ll have to applique it by machine….wish me luck
November 10th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
I am really trying to love applique!!!!!!
November 10th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
I love your design…and I know I will love the magazine…what could be better…100 blocks from 100 talented designers!!!
November 10th, 2009 at 8:09 pm
I have just discovered your way of applique and am a convert
Applique is so much easier for me this way. Love your little block too. It is sweet.
Cheers Lynne
November 10th, 2009 at 8:17 pm
I swore I would never ever do applique. And then I took a class on machine applique from my shop and I LOVE IT!!! I just created blocks of dachshunds for a dog sampler quilt and I am so happy with how they turned out! My first attempt totally on my own and they look awesome!
November 10th, 2009 at 9:02 pm
I’ve only done a little applique and that was by hand. However, I have several projects waiting to be started that call for machine applique, so I guess I’ll be learning how to do it soon. I love the applique in this block!
November 10th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
yeah, really love applique…opens up a lot of new possibilites!!
November 10th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
I love applique and I just don’t dedicate enough time to it. Your block is gorgeous!
November 10th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
I ADORE aplique I learnt about it a while ago, I’m making a huge applique chrsitmas design, it’s taking me a longggggg time and effort, but it’s worth it, I’d like to finish it soon, congrats you’re in the book, please count me in the giveaway since the fact we don’t have quilting books here!
November 10th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
I love your design–so very, very charming! Congratulations on being in this special publication!
November 10th, 2009 at 10:27 pm
Very pretty block, I love to applique, just not enough time to do a large project..this would be perfect. Can’t wait to see the book.

November 10th, 2009 at 10:44 pm
What a clever idea to turn your blog into a little quilt! Thanks.
November 10th, 2009 at 11:07 pm
I love the block. I am a newbie to applique, just finishing my first applique quilt. I thought that I wouldn’t be very good at it. But it was fun. Looking forward to doing more.
November 10th, 2009 at 11:57 pm
I love applique,My family calls it my occupational therapy: I say it is my therapy otherwise they would be sending me to a therapist! Very sweet block I would like to do it in 30’s fabs. Great job!
November 11th, 2009 at 1:03 am
Major applique addict here! I teach a class using Pearl’s stiletto, run a bi-weekly applique “support” group, member of TAS, several Yahoo applique groups, AND I send ALL of my students to Beth’d website for goodies!
November 11th, 2009 at 1:34 am
Beth I love your sweet block. I’m working on Now and Forever becasue I was fascinated with your method of applique. I’ve done all the flowers and now comes the hard part-putting it together.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:54 am
I like the process and the finished project that applique allows one to accomplish. And it is a different process from piecing, so a change in pace.

November 11th, 2009 at 3:28 am
Beth, what a lovely block! I hope we get the magazine here in South Africa. I’ve used the Wash Away Applique - what a difference it makes from using Freezer Paper. I am eagerly looking forward to receiving your new book.
November 11th, 2009 at 4:09 am

November 11th, 2009 at 10:32 am
What a darling little applique block and I’m anxious to try your applique method. Congrats on being chosen for this special issue.
November 11th, 2009 at 7:25 pm
I love all your designs and this one is no exception. Congratulations.
November 11th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Congratulations, Beth! I am still circling around applique. I have carefully saved the Now and Forever pattern, and have some fabric in mind from my stash. I’ve bought applique needles and applique pins. But I haven’t actually done any yet! I hope I still qualify for the giveaway!
November 11th, 2009 at 9:39 pm
I do love to do applique. Thanks for the chance to win.
November 12th, 2009 at 8:15 am
I do love applique! I just haven’t been brave enough to attempt it yet.
November 12th, 2009 at 11:08 am
I have always loved to applique and for a time that was all I did. Now I do peice too but always have a applique quilt in the works, but now low and behold I don’t have to do it by hand thanks to you Beth. I love your method and will always use it untill you come up with something else. Thank you so much Keep up the good work
November 13th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
Wash-away applique sheets? WHERE do I get some? Sounds like a wonderful idea.
November 15th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
I love applique and I especially love your quilts. I am working on Now and Forever. It will be the first of your quilts that I have done.
November 16th, 2009 at 5:40 am
Your method of applique has really transformed my life - I spent the first ten years of my quilting life concentrating on piecing techniques until I found your site and your block of the month quilts. I have now made three of them and although they are challenging, they are achievable step by small step. Thank you for sharing so much information.
November 22nd, 2009 at 6:11 pm
I love your block in the QM 100 blocks. I won one of the magazines and am checking out all the websites. You are new to me and I am intrigued by your new book, so of course I will probably order it…. even tho I have enough books for a quilt shop myself. I love your style.
